My current body of work (exclusively oil on panel) is based on nature, but not representative of it in a commonly approached way. Within my paintings, form is represented by color, without regard to mass. The temporal quality of the form represents a frozen moment in the life of nature, both animate and inanimate. I don’t work on location, but instead I choose to gather ideas based on my own experiences, as well as from friends’ travels and work in the studio. I work sketches out on paper first. I stop the time in a box, as my work takes place exclusively within an evenly proportioned square. After I recreate the sketch on the panel, frequently via grid work, I sit with it and work out color schemes for the painting; generally the color formats have no relation to the original natural form. Each color is relegated to its own shape on the panel, without any over-painting. After each color is laid in, I smooth out the brush-stokes in the wet paint so as to have as un-painterly a surface as possible, therefore each color will lie on the same plane.
